How to Install the Claude Browser Extension in Chrome and Edge
This guide shows you how to install the Claude browser extension (Claude for Chrome) in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Use it when you want Claude to read, click, and navigate websites alongside you in a side panel while you browse.
Type: How-to Category: Getting Started > Browser Extension Tags: Claude for Chrome, browser extension, install Claude, Chrome extension, Edge extension, add to Chrome, side panel, Chrome Web Store Audience: All users on a plan that includes the extension
Before You Start (Prerequisites)
- A desktop or laptop computer. The extension is not supported on mobile devices.
- The latest version of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (both are Chromium-based browsers).
- An active Claude account. The extension is currently a beta feature available to Max plan subscribers. If you don't see it or can't sign in, confirm your plan includes access.
- A few minutes to review the permissions the extension requests.
Note: Claude for Chrome is officially distributed through the Chrome Web Store and is officially supported on Google Chrome. Because Microsoft Edge is built on the same Chromium engine, the same extension can also be installed in Edge using the steps below, though Edge is not officially listed as a supported browser.
Important — beta feature: Browser use lets Claude interact directly with websites on your behalf, which carries inherent risks. Review your organization's guidance and the "Using Claude for Chrome Safely" documentation before enabling it.
Install in Google Chrome
1. Open Google Chrome
Launch Google Chrome on your desktop or laptop. Make sure you're signed in to the Chrome profile you want to use.
2. Go to the Chrome Web Store listing
Open the Chrome Web Store and search for Claude for Chrome, or go directly to the Claude for Chrome listing.
3. Add the extension
Click Add to Chrome. When the confirmation dialog appears, review the requested permissions and click Add extension.
You should see a brief confirmation that the extension was added, and the Claude icon will appear near your toolbar.
4. Sign in to your Claude account
When prompted, sign in with your Claude account credentials. You must be on a plan that includes the extension (currently Max).
5. Pin the extension to your toolbar
Click the puzzle piece icon (Extensions) at the top-right of Chrome, then click the thumbtack/pin icon next to Claude.
The Claude icon now stays visible in your toolbar for quick access.
6. Grant the required permissions
Follow the prompts to grant the permissions Claude needs to interact with your browser. See the Permissions Reference below for what each one does.
7. Open Claude
Click the Claude icon in your toolbar. Claude opens in a side panel that stays visible while you browse.
Install in Microsoft Edge
Edge is Chromium-based, so it can run extensions from the Chrome Web Store. You'll first allow extensions from other stores, then install Claude the same way.
1. Open Microsoft Edge
Launch Microsoft Edge on your desktop or laptop and sign in to the profile you want to use.
2. Go to the Chrome Web Store
In Edge, navigate to the Chrome Web Store and search for Claude for Chrome. Open the listing by selecting its tile.
3. Start the installation
On the listing page, select Get extension (shown in a banner at the top of the page) or the Get / Add to Chrome button on the page.
4. Allow extensions from other stores
If you haven't done this before, Edge shows a dialog: Allow extensions from other stores? Select Allow to continue.
This is a one-time approval. After this, Chrome Web Store extensions install normally in Edge.
5. Review permissions and add the extension
At the prompt showing the permissions the extension requires, review them carefully and select Add extension. You'll see a confirmation that the extension has been added.
6. Sign in to your Claude account
When prompted, sign in with your Claude account credentials.
7. Pin the extension to your toolbar
Select the Extensions icon (to the right of the address bar), then pin Claude so its icon stays visible.
8. Open Claude
Click the Claude icon to open Claude in the side panel while you browse.
Verify It Worked
You've installed the extension successfully when:
- The Claude icon appears in your browser toolbar.
- Clicking the icon opens Claude in a side panel that stays visible as you browse.
- You're signed in (you can start a conversation without being prompted to log in again).
