How to Set Up the Vonage Business Communications App on iOS
This guide walks you through downloading, installing, and configuring the Vonage Business Communications (VBC) app on your iPhone or iPad so you can make and receive business calls, send messages, and access voicemail from your mobile device.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure you have:
- An active Vonage Business Communications account with a user extension assigned to you
- Your VBC login credentials (email address and password) — provided by your company administrator
- An iPhone or iPad running iOS 14.0 or later
- A stable Wi-Fi or cellular data connection
- Sufficient storage space on your device (approximately 200 MB)
Note: If you're unsure whether you have a VBC account or extension, contact your company's phone system administrator before proceeding.
Steps
1. Download the Vonage Business Communications App
- Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap the Search icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Type "Vonage Business Communications" in the search bar and tap Search.
- Locate the app published by Vonage and tap Get (or the cloud download icon if previously installed).
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your Apple ID password to confirm the download.
- Wait for the app to finish installing — you'll see the VBC icon appear on your home screen.
Tip: Make sure you download the app published by Vonage to avoid installing a third-party or outdated version.
2. Open the App and Sign In
- Tap the VBC app icon on your home screen to launch it.
- On the welcome screen, tap Sign In.
- Enter your email address and password associated with your Vonage Business account.
- Tap Sign In to continue.
If you've forgotten your password, tap Forgot Password? on the sign-in screen and follow the instructions sent to your email.
3. Grant Required Permissions
When launching for the first time, iOS will prompt you to allow several permissions. These are required for the app to function properly:
| Permission | Why It's Needed | Recommended Setting |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone | Required to make and receive calls | Allow |
| Notifications | Required to receive incoming calls and messages | Allow |
| Contacts | Allows the app to match callers to your address book | Allow (optional but recommended) |
| Background App Refresh | Keeps the app connected when not in the foreground | Enable in Settings |
For each prompt, tap Allow to grant access. If you accidentally tap Don't Allow, you can update these permissions at any time by going to Settings > Privacy & Security on your iPhone.
4. Configure Notifications for Incoming Calls
To ensure you don't miss incoming calls, verify that notifications are fully enabled:
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap Vonage Business Communications.
- Tap Notifications.
- Toggle Allow Notifications to the on (green) position.
- Enable Alerts, Sounds, and Badges for the best experience.
- Return to the VBC app.
Important: If notifications are disabled, you will not receive incoming call alerts when the app is running in the background.
Verify It Worked
To confirm the app is set up correctly:
- Make a test call: Tap the Dialpad tab, enter any number (e.g., a colleague's extension), and place a call. You should hear audio clearly through the earpiece or speaker.
- Receive a test call: Have a colleague call your extension — your iPhone should ring with a notification or CallKit screen.
- Check voicemail: Tap the Voicemail tab to confirm your messages are loading.
- Check messages: Tap the Messages tab to verify your team messages and SMS threads appear.
Common Issues
The app won't sign in / shows an error message Verify your credentials are correct and that your account is active. If your company uses SSO, use the "Sign in with SSO" option. Contact your admin if the issue persists.
Calls aren't ringing on my phone Check that Notifications are enabled in your iPhone Settings (see Step 4), that Do Not Disturb mode is turned off, and that Background App Refresh is enabled for the VBC app.
Poor call quality Switch from cellular to Wi-Fi (or vice versa) and test again. Poor call quality is often due to network instability. Ensure the VBC app has not been restricted from using data in Settings > Cellular.
The app crashes on launch Force-close the app and reopen it. If the issue continues, delete and reinstall the app from the App Store. Your settings will be restored upon signing back in.
I don't see my extension or voicemail Your extension may not yet be assigned in the admin portal. Contact your Vonage account administrator to confirm your user setup is complete.
